Own Car vs Rideshare

Ever wondered what the difference in cost would be in having your own car compared to using a ride share company for everywhere you go?

I did, so as always I made a spreadsheet. I was surprised with the outcome and in the example I use below, I think I am being quite conservative.

Allow for 60 ride share trips at $20.00 totalling $1200 for a month

Compared to monthly costs associated with owning a car:

So at $600 per month, that’s around a $35,000 car – give or take some of the variables.

Insurance, rego and insurance are all pretty straight forward costs.

Maintenance – I allowed a set of tyres every two years, a service a year and a few washes.

Parking – I wish I only spent $20 per month for parking, and for fines I have included both parking and traffic.

So this amount could quite easily be significantly higher than I have set out and also quite a bit higher than the 60 ride share trips.
